A good movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was directed by Joseph Losey, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, I think it was only the 2nd movie I saw directed by this director but it definitely turned out to be an intriguing watch, that’s for sure. Indeed, even though the French have produced 100’s of movies praising the French resistance and how they bravely fought against the German oppressors, this movie did present a much colder reality displaying that the French society was also filled with cowards, backstabbers and profiters. At the center of this dark and oppressing tale, you have Alain Delon, an actor I definitely should watch more often, who was so charismatic back in those days. And yet, right from the very start, his character was rather unlikeable and, if you would expect this guy to grow a conscious following the events displayed in this movie, you would be rather disappointed but this commitment to this character was actually commendable and appreciated. Still, it went even further as the Losey went for a rather surrealist vibe which made the whole thing even more intriguing. However, to be honest, it is also made the whole thing even more difficult to grasp as there were some moments during which I was scratching my head wondering what the hell was going on and how and where did this guy actually landed. Eventually, I think you have to be in the right mood to be able to enjoy such a slow paced mystery during which you discover pretty much nothing and during which the characters don’t seem to evolve either. Anyway, to conclude, even if it wasn’t really an easy movie to digest, it was still pretty good and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
