An average movie

To be honest, even though this movie had been rather poorly received, since I always had a weak spot for Marc Forster’s work and since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, what the hell happened for this once so promising director? He was doing fine until he got the James Bong gig with ‘Quatum of Solace’ which turned out to be the weakest Bond outing starring Daniel Craig and, ever since, he has struggled to get his mojo back. Well, I’m afraid it won’t get better any time soon since this movie turn out to be his weakest directorial effort so far. I mean, it’s not that it was awful, it was visually actually pretty neat and I really liked the way they tried to display how a blind person might perceive our world.  Furthermore, Blake Lively was not bad at all. Unfortunately, it has been a while since I have seen a thriller which had barely no pulse whatsoever. In fact, was it actually really supposed to be a thriller? I mean, for 3/4 duration, I was wondering where this movie was actually going and it was only during the final 10 mins that there was a typical (and rather underwhelming) thriller twist ending. Of course, to hire Jason Clarke to play yet another spineless loser was definitely a mistake and to cast him was pretty much a spoiler right from the beginning. I think it was also a mistake to have the action taking place in Thailand. Sure, I get that, by having the action taking place in an exotic location, they actually increased the alienation felt by the main character but what was the point if all the involved characters would be foreigners and speak only in English? To make things worse, they also added an episode in Spain which also felt completely random and had very little added value. To conclude, I do think that there were a couple of decent ideas but it seems that they got stuck with delivering a thriller, something which should have been dropped right from the start. Anyway, the end-result was seriously limp and I don’t think it is really worth a look.
