A very good movie

Since I’m a huge Reggae fan and since this movie was available on Netflix, I was really eager to check it out. Well, I had never heard of this documentary before so it’s pretty cool that Netflix would allow a massive audience to get an easy access to it. Eventually, I have to admit that I didn’t know all the bands that were displayed  and I have tried to track down who was involved but it turned out to be rather tricky since the damned thing is so obscure. Anyway, the concerts and recording sessions were all pretty awesome, especially the scenes with Aswad and Steel Pulse. Those were and still are obviously the most famous British Reggae bands (with the exception of UB40, a band which was for some reasons not included in this documentary) and I had the pleasure to see both acts in concert many years later. However, they were filmed here really at the beginning of their respective careers, a couple of years before they reached their commercial breakthrough and that’s what makes this documentary so precious. Indeed, the timing was pretty much perfect and you really get to see the birth of a musical genre in the UK. However, to be honest, all the interviews in between were not really interesting, I’m afraid. I mean, first of all, half of the time, you didn’t even know who was talking, the questions they were asked were not really pertinent and the answers they gave were just the usual stereotypes. There was definitely an opportunity to go deeper in the subject here but they missed it, I’m afraid. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still great to see this old footage and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are into Reggae music like me.
