An average movie

To be honest, I thought we would go to see ‘The Suicide Squad’ but, for some reasons, Nick, my stepson, decided we should see this movie instead. Anyway, after ‘The Haunted Mansion’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, Disney decided to develop another one of their famous rides into a live-action film which might sound like a terribly misguided idea but, to be honest, the damned thing was not so bad after all. Of course, it won’t become a massive franchise like ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ but, back then, it was pretty much like some lightning in a bottle, I’m afraid. Still, I thought it was a good old fashioned adventure flick with some dashing visuals but it did miss some wild card like Captain Jake Sparrow, even though Jesse Plemons was quite fun completely chewing the scenery playing some kind of demented German soldier. Concerning Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson, they were both fine enough but, as a couple, I’m sorry, they basically had zero chemistry. I mean, from the moment they meet, it was pretty obvious that they would fall in love but, to be honest, you might wonder why they actually ended up together. There was also the fact that Johnson’s character actually turned out to be a 400 years old cursed conquistador. I mean, sure, why not? However, the problem was that Dwayne Johnson didn’t play the character any differently than if he would have been just as old as he looked. Coming back to the conquistadors, it was pretty neat that they actually did include the legendary Aguirre in the mix but you wish they managed to do more with this intriguing character. Anyway, to conclude, even if the damned thing was quite forgettable and generic, it was still fun and I think it is worth a look, at least, if you like the genre.
