this version of dr. moreau is probably the one most people knew until the new revision. there was an earlier version, which i've only heard is not that good.

this version is fine for an older movie, dated for today's expectations. with both this and the val kilmer version i had hoped for more and got something which was just ok.

this version is more true to the book and it feels that way. its the kind've direct adaption that you expect from old movies not willing to elaborate or deviate. theres nothing wrong with that, but i had hoped to fill some of the drama instead of just sounding it out. in both movies, but especially in this one theres an opportunity at the beginning of the book to set the stage for whats to come thats entirely missed: the howling of the dogs was creepy as hell to read...it was foreboding and mystical.

this is good sunday viewing.
