A good movie

Since I really loved ‘Hereditary’, I was really eager to check this follow-up from Ari Aster, especially since it had been very well received as well. Well, it was ambitious and the damned thing definitely had some potential and, during the first hour, it was just quite amazing to behold. Indeed, the intro was pretty intense and the whole thing looked great with an impressive immersive mood. Furthermore, Florence Pugh definitely delivered here a really strong performance, she displayed a great potential and she will be someone I will closely follow, that’s for sure. Unfortunately, even if I mostly enjoyed this movie, there was one thing that really bothered me though and it was the huge lack of character development, which was rather surprising coming from a movie lasting around 150 mins. It didn’t bother me during the first hour because I was assuming that there was still plenty of time left. However, it became more obvious from the moment these 2 elders jumped from a cliff. You might argue that this shocking moment came too early but the biggest issue was the reaction or lack of it from the American characters. In fact, they didn’t react at all, except for Christian who said something like ‘It’s cultural so we shouldn’t be judgemental…’ which was just ridiculous. From then on, a succession of weird and unsettling scenes kept occurring but the characters remained mostly apathetic and unphased in spite of what was going on. As a result, since you didn’t get to know the characters and since they were basically turned into some kind of brainwashed puppets with no way to determine their own fate, it was rather hard to really care about what they were going through. Anyway, to conclude, even if it wasn’t a complete home-run like ‘Hereditary’, there was still a lot to enjoy with this movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
