An average movie

Even though this movie was rather obscure (I'm apparently the only one who saw it on Listal), since it was starring Carice van Houten, I still wanted to check it out. Well, it was definitely really neat to see a very young van Houten at the beginning of her career and, as a bonus, there was also an even younger Michiel Huisman, almost 20 years before they would reach an international audience thanks to 'Game of Thrones'. Concerning the movie itself, well, it was not bad and it was definitely better than your average Dutch production but, to be honest, it was still nothing really amazing though. First of all, I thought it was pretty obvious that Martin Koolhoven had been inspired by Alex van Warmerdam, probably the best Dutch film director after Paul Verhoeven. Indeed, the whole thing had the typical van Warmerdam quirky and absurd vibe but it is something tricky to handle as it gives a movie such a random feeling. In this case, even though it started with a rather light tone, it became increasingly darker. Seriously, they even threw in some incest for good measure. Eventually, what bother me the most was that I never really cared about the characters who were often rather tedious and even sometimes downright unlikeable. I mean, it is fine to focus on such ordinary characters but Koolhoven never managed to make them interesting or entertaining enough. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is worth a look, if only to see the terribly talented and lovely Carice van Houten.ย
