The Commune review

An average movie

Since I'm a big fan of Thomas Vinterberg's work, of course, I was quite eager to check this movie. Well, even though the damned thing really had some potential, especially since Vinterberg himself grew up in such a commune in Denmark, it still didn't really work, I'm afraid. Basically, instead of actually focusing on the commune itself and most of its residents, they focused only on a couple which was a mistake in my opinion. As a result, it became a rather typical tale of a couple struggling with adultery and, in fact, they could have completely removed the commune since the story would have been pretty much the same in an ordinary setting. To make things worse, Ulrich Thomsen, who's a fine actor, was stuck playing such a selfish douchebag but, at least, the guy was honest. Anyway, at some point, they still decided to live all together which was interesting and it seemed that it might all work out after all. However, his ex had then a massive breakdown which was understandable but also slightly annoying. Indeed, she was the one who had started the whole thing and who actually literally said that to live only with her husband was not enough for her. But then, was the commune the whole reason why he started an affair with a very young hot student? Eventually, this ordinary love triangle completely eclipsed the life in the commune which was reduced to a bunch of meetings during which people apparently drank a lot of beer. It's such a pity because they all seemed so interesting and charismatic and all the actors involved gave some solid performances. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and I think it is still worth a look, especially if you are interested in Thomas Vinterberg's work but there is no doubt that it could and/or should have been much better.
