An average movie

To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, I was surprised by how lame it actually turned out to be. Basically, it was one of these ill-conceived romantic-comedies in which nothing work at all. Let's talk about the plot for example. It was about an English man who got so depressed after he found out that his girlfriend was marrying someone else that he went off to visit a city called Hope just because he liked the name. That wasn't exactly the strongest concept ever but, to make things worse, at some point, his ex-girlfriend showed up (which was completely spoiled by the fact that Minnie Driver was displayed everywhere on the promotional material) to tell him that the wedding was some kind of joke(!), and then tries to win him over again. I mean, seriously,  was there anything in this summary that remotely sounded like a good idea? I don't think so. To make things worse, the characters were just rather poorly written. For example, Minnie Driver actually seemed to have fun with her role but there was nothing likeable about this woman and, even worse, there was absolutely no chemistry between her and the main character. On the other hand, Heather  Graham's character was not much better, I'm afraid. I mean, she was first introduced as some kind of therapist but this idea was dropped after 5 mins. Then, out of the blue, she finishes a bottle of liquor early in the morning and, 10 minutes later, she gets naked in front of a total stranger with no explanation whatsoever. At least, the main cast  (Colin Firth, Heather Graham, Minnie Driver) was quite charismatic but there is no doubt that it was one of the weakest romantic-comedies I have seen in quite some time and I don't think it is really worth a look.
