Review of Jungle Fever

True American horror. A nation poisoned by racial thought. Lee uses the interracial romance launch pad to discuss the imprisonment of self through one's own doing, race, religion, family, community and nation. In fact this film is more so about familial and community attitudes then anything else. How the family and community entraps individuals in a certain livable space and mindset. True apes we are. The character Angie Tucci never leaving her Italian neighbour or Flipper Purify living in Harlem and entrenched with a "pro-black" mindset to showcase the authenticity of his blackness both outside and in.

As a subplot Lee focuses on the crack problem in the black community but it is utilized in such a way to highlight escapism and the pariah class, such as in this tale the lead characters will become if they decide to go against the aforementioned institutions of race, religion, etc... by dating. The film isn't a masterpiece but as often with Lee's joints it provokes thought in the audience through a myriad of discourse on screen.
