I love this show! I'm a huge CW fan to begin with and I resisted watching The Vampire Diaries for so long because it was a vampire show. I'm not huge into the genre even though I love Supernatural. I thought it would be over the top and trying too hard to be sexy and "dangerous" but I was wrong. This show has a lot less to do with the vampires than it does life in general although many of the issues are brought on by the supernatural beings in the show.
I'm so glad that they found Nina Dobrev for this show. She is perfect for the role and sexy as hell. I think she'll be a huge name if she plays her cards right. She does an amazing job playing both the Katherine and Elena roles. I love that she can be this sweet innocent Elena one minute and bad to the bone Katharine the next. Plus (and I'm a girl here) how hot does she look in Katherine's wardrobe.
Her real-life boyfriend Ian is just as amazing in his role though I find that he plays the same character in most of his roles (Lost, Smallville) that I'm beginning to wonder if he's as much of a douchebag as he plays. I'd like to find out. I know everyone thinks he's hot but he just doesn't do it for me but his looks really work for the character and I love how expressive he is. I like the Damon and Elena drama and I love the way Damon was before he turned into a vampire, very sweet, naive and innocent. It's such a change.
Paul Wesley is fantastic as Stefan especially during the parts where Stefan is acting out. I think Paul has a great range and he is really not bad on the eyes either. I like how caring he is towards Elena and they way they interact with each other and take care of each other even when the other doesn't want to be taken care of.
I think that the secondary characters really add a new level to the show. Kat Graham is good as Bonnie and I'd like to see more of her. I love Jeremy and Bonnie together so we'll see how that goes. Steven R. McQueen is adorable (I say this because I feel I'm too much older than him to call him hot) and I love his broody character, I think he pulls it off well. I want more Jeremy. Caroline is amazing and I loved what they did with Candice's character in season 2 when she was with Tyler. The whole storyline was compelling to me even though it wasn't supposed to be as important as the main story of the show. I just wish there would have been more drama with Matt. I like that they're keeping Zach's character human (at least for now) and that makes it much more interesting with more depth. He doesn't have a ring keeping him alive so he has much more to lose than Alaric and Jeremy. I can't wait to see what they do with him in the future.
The only major flub I saw was the way they handled Jenna's death. I'm not sure if it was because the actress wanted to leave or what but she was just gone without too much drama. I would have liked Alaric to go off the rails a little more or something. Overall, I think it should have been more traumatic for everyone involved but I have the feeling it had more to do with behind the scenes stuff than actual storyline.
I look forward to seeing more of season 3 and to see what they do with the addition of more supernatural entities.
