An average movie

I already saw this movie but, since it was a while back and since I will also watch soon ‘Coming 2 America’, I thought I might as well give this movie a 2nd chance. By now, somehow, I have seen most of the movies starring Eddie Murphy and his career is definitely not anymore what it used to be, that’s for sure. However, back in the 80's, he was really a superstar and his movies were highly successful. For example, this movie was a huge success at the box-office and it is considered as one of his classics. Well, to be honest, the first time I watched the damned thing, I thought it was actually rather disappointing. Indeed, it was the 2nd time Murphy was working with John Landis and their previous movie, ‘Trading Places’, was really good so I thought this movie would be a sure winner. But, at the time, in my opinion, the whole plot was actually very average and completely predictable and I didn't find any of the jokes really hilarious. Well, after all these years, I have to admit that it was not so bad after all. Indeed, the concept was to bring some kind of fairy-tale prince to a very grimy realistic New York and the contrast was actually fairly entertaining. The fact that the prince was actually African was because Eddie Murphy is black, the country he was coming from had actually nothing to do with what was/is actually going in Africa. For the first time, Eddie Murphy was also putting some disguises, a formula he will use more and more in the future, and I have to admit, it was a gimmick which was interesting back then but nowadays, it is just really annoying to death. Sometimes you wonder what’s the point of portraying all these characters. Anyway, to conclude, even if I’m still not a huge fan, I have to admit that it is actually a decent comedy and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
