Notes: Before I begin, I must clarify that this review would have some spoilers in order to make a point. So, if you haven't seen the films yet and you are afraid of spoilers, please do not continue reading. Also, I want to say that I haven't read the comic book, so this review would be particually about the movie as an independet product.
Valerian and the City of Thousand Planetes is bad in almost all the sense of the word: generic, unfunny, boring, uninspired, predictable, there is much to throw at.
Something that moderately did well was the visuals, which I will admit, there are pretty well made in over all aspects: The CGI is well rendered, the design of the costumes and backgrounds are pretty well made, the design for the aliens, the directing in this film is overall impresive with some creative shots, for example the opening sequence that kicks this film off is breathtaking that serves as a good presentation of the setting or the action secuences which is well done with an excting coreography, the soundtrack is competent and makes this movie a little less unplesant to sit though, And..........that's about it, yeah, besides that, everything else is garbage.
One of the many and most notorious problems that the film has: The Acting. Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne portray 2 bland and generic special government agents tasked with some of the universe's most important tasks. The problem with these besides the poor caractherization of the 2 (Valerian is a rebel but also inteligent somehow , and Laureline It's smart and responsable or something like that) they also show SO LITTLE about their chemistry between them that the romace feels forced as hell. DeHaan gives such an extremely wooden performance that it is borderline painful, since he express so little about his caracther to feel somewhat believable, this a role that would fit better with someone like Chris Patt, Matt Damon, Tom Cruise or Will Smith, actors which had experiences playing carismatic or rebel caracthers. But Nop, we got Dane, an actor which relies enterily on the director and the script to make a good performance. In Delevingne case, is not much better, she keeps the same serious face for most of the movie, only serves as an Infodumping in order to explain stuff, the worst part is the romance subplot: It takes most of the scenes of movie, focusing more how much they love each other instead of ACTUAL interractions. The romantic relationship between these two characters maybe could have been believable with a different pair of actors, and of course, better written relationships than just the tipical and basic "opposites attract each other"
As for the plot itself, in concept is pretty simple (everyone is looking for some kind of MacGuffin that would help them in their mission), but it managed to be a convoluted mess: This is a 2 hour and 20 minute film that has no business being anything over 90 minutes, most of the scenes (specially in the last act) cut be cut aways and the movie would be much better, since there they fille like filler (example: the detour that features singer/songwriter Rihanna). Speaking of which, the "funny" scenes are also a problem: All jokes are shit, they are very try-hard, inmersion breaking, uninspered and with any good punchline, which are delivered in a such a terrible way by the main actors or a comic relief in the background.
To Conclude: Valerian is a waste of time. Only conformists or people with little critical sense could like this shit, save yourselves from this film.

Notas: Antes de comenzar, debo aclarar que esta reseña tendría algunos spoilers para hacer un punto. Por lo tanto, si aún no ha visto la cinta y le tienes miedo a los spoilers, no continúes leyendo. Además, quiero decir que no he leído el cómic, por lo que esta reseña sería particularmente sobre la película como un producto independiente.
Algo que hizo moderadamente bien fueron los efectos visuales, lo cual admitiré, están bastante bien hechos en todos los aspectos: el CGI está bien representado, el diseño de los disfraces y los fondos están bastante bien hechos, el diseño para los alienígenas o los trajes, la dirección en esta película es impresionante en general con algunas tomas creativas, por ejemplo, la secuencia inicial que pone en marcha esta película es impresionante que sirve como una buena presentación del escenario o las secuencias de acción que está bien hecho con una coreografía exótica, la banda sonora es competente y hace que esta película sea un poco menos desagradable para ver, Y .......... eso es todo, sí, fuera de eso, todo lo demás es basura.
Uno de los muchos y más notorios problemas que tiene la película: La Actuacion principal. Dane DeHaan y Cara Delevingne retratan a dos agentes especiales, genéricos, encargados de algunas de las tareas más importantes del universo. El problema con estos además de la pobre caracterizacion de los 2 (Valerian es un rebelde carismatico pero también inteligente de alguna manera, y Laureline es inteligente y responsable o algo así) también muestran TAN POCO acerca de su química entre ellos que la romance se siente forzado como la mierda. DeHaan ofrece un rendimiento tan extremadamente madera que es dudoso en el límite, ya que expresa tan poco acerca de su personaje como para sentirse creíble, este sería un papel que encajaría mejor con alguien como Chris Patt, Matt Damon, Tom Cruise o Will Smith, actores que tenido experiencias haciendo personajes carismáticos o rebeldes en el pasado. Pero Nop, tenemos a Dane, un actor que depende demasiado en el director y el guión para hacer una buena actuación. En el caso Delevingne, no es mucho mejor, ella mantiene la misma cara seria durante la mayor parte de la película, solo sirve para explicar de manera forzada cosas, la peor parte es la subtrama romantica: Toma la mayoría de las escenas de la película, centrándose más cuánto se aman en lugar de interacciones REALES. La relación romántica entre estos dos personajes podría haber sido UN POCO MAS creíble con un par diferente de actores.
En cuanto a la trama en sí, en concepto es bastante simple (todo el mundo está buscando algún tipo de MacGuffin que los ayude en su misión), pero se las arregló para ser un lío complicado: esta es una película de 2 horas y 20 minutos que no tiene proposito de ser algo más de 90 minutos, la mayoría de las escenas (especialmente en el último acto) se podrian cortar y la película sería mucho mejor, ya que allí solo estan como relleno (ejemplo: el desvío que presenta a la cantante y compositora Rihanna). Hablando de eso, las escenas "divertidas" también son un problema: todos los chistes son una mierda, son muy flojos, se rompen en la inmersión, desinpirados y con un buen remate, que se entregan de una manera tan terrible por los actores principales o un secundario que es alivio cómico.
Para concluir: Valerian es una pérdida de tiempo. Solo los conformistas o las personas con poco sentido crítico podrían gustarles esta mierda, Aléjense de esta película lo que mas puedan.
