A genre-bending dramedy with a unique premise

I watched this film in theaters as part of a College class I was taking at the time. Literally only knew of the basic premise of this film on the very day I was going to see it. Had no prior knowledge of the film and hadn't even seen the trailers for it. But from what I heard, I found the concept of this film unique and I thought it'd be worth watching. Honestly, this film surprised me in more ways than one. I believe the way this film handles its admittedly ridiculous premise is impressive. Mixing relationship drama with kaiju films is such a strange genre-mixing that works to the film's advantage. It really ups the stakes of what would otherwise be a more personalized drama.ย

I was really impressed with Anne Hathaway's performance. I really got into her character as this pathetic alcoholic who is trying to better herself. By the end, she becomes a very likable (and rather kick-ass) character. But Jason Sudeikis was the highlight of this film, giving a truly phenomenal performance. His character really transforms through the film. And Sudeikis does an impressive job turning him from a likable to a downright despicable (and sometimes frightening) character.

If you've seen the trailers, just realize that the film has dramatic elements and takes some dark turns. So don't go in expecting a lighter farce. I do not want to spoil much about the film, even its basic concept because I fully recommend you watch this with fresh eyes. But for those of you interested in a genre-bending dramedy with a unique premise, I would definitely recommend this film.
