Review of The Magnificent Seven

Given the cast I'm surprised that it wasn't received all that well. Out of all the Antoine Fuqua movies I have seen the only one I hated was King Arthur. Other than that he has been wildly entertaining. This is the first film written by Nic Pizzolatto and he has another coming out next year that looks to have a good cast. He also did work on True Detective. Richard Wenk has done a few movies of which another one dealt with an ensemble action cast (Expendables 2). It did take me too long to check this one out, but I'm glad I did.

This cast was incredible. It was interesting seeing Vincent D'Onofrio's character. Then again he is actually quite a diverse actor with some vastly different characters throughout his career. Chris Pratt was a little bit of his typical character like you see these days, but he was still quite likable here. Ethan Hawke's character was great and added some bits that were pretty well done. Byung-hun Lee was a badass as usual! I liked the newcomers Martin Sensmeier and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. They played their parts well and had some interesting characteristics. I loved Haley Bennett. She is growing more and more well known plus she is just plain gorgeous. The villains were just okay though the bad guy Indian Denali was the best one. I mean Peter Sarsgaard had a fine performance as well as Cam Gigandet, but honestly they just weren't the most memorable. Of course Denzel Washington is the best for last. The guy just adds so much excellence when he plays a role. Definitely one of my favorites from him. The first half was pretty good and set up the scenario and characters nicely. The last half though once the battle starts really gets your blood flowing. The style of the fighting is fun and thrilling. There were a few cliches, but they didn't bother me too much here. I thought the fact that only the minorities of the seven survived except of course Billy Rocks. I respect that though as more often the white guys are the only ones to live.

There were sequels to the other movies, but if they tried for this one they might be a bit different. Although I can't say for sure as I have only seen Seven Samurai and frankly I never finished it although I should. Anyways this was quite fun and worth the watch. I mean the story isn't the most original, but the action and acting is where this thrived.
