An average movie

When I first heard about this movie, I thought it sounded really intriguing. I mean, come on, Arnaud Desplechin directing an English speaking feature starring a great actor like Benicio Del Toro? There was definitely some potential for something awesome. Eventually, it was released at the Cannes Film Festival but it didn't make much waves after all but I was still eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, even if it turned out to be a decent watch, I can't say it really blew me away though. I don't blame Desplechin, Del Toro and Mathieu Amalric as they all did a fine job and the story, combining psychology, anthropology and Indian culture, was really interesting but the whole thing never really grabbed me. The other thing that didn't work was the dubious background of Georges Devereux. It was something that kept coming from time to time but it was never properly developed and it turned out to be more distracting than anything else. Indeed, these two men had a connection and the troubled mind of Jimmy Picard was more than enough to be dealt with. Anyway, to conclude, even if this movie was in my opinion a failed experiment for the French director, it was not bad at all and I still think it is worth a look.ย
