I already saw this movie but, since it was a while back, I was quite eager to check it out again. In fact, I remember it very well the first time I saw this movie. Indeed, back then, I was living in England and I saw it in the movie theater when it was released. At the time, it was a big critical success and it is still considered as the best movie directed by Cameron Crowe. Well, to be honest, even though I thought it was indeed a pretty cool feature, somehow, it never really blew me away though. It’s weird because, on paper, it sounded like a great story and since I was about the same age of the main character and since I loved the music of that particular time period, it should have been a sure winner. Well, even after watching this movie 25 years later, to be honest, I still ended up with pretty much the same feeling. At least, back then in 2000, I was around the same age of the main character and, at the time, going to concerts was like one of my favorite hobbies so I could or should have been able to identify with him. Nowadays, I’m in my 40’s, I don’t go to concerts anymore or very rarely and, to be honest, I don’t miss it at all so I think I felt even less connection with the material this time around. The first time I saw it, I thought the issue was that I didn’t care much about the main character but I don’t agree anymore. The issue, in my opinion, is that even though there was a strong cast involved (Billy Crudup, Kate Hudson, Jason Lee, Frances McDormand, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Zooey Deschanel, Anna Paquin), eventually, none of the characters involved, including the main character, was really interesting after all. The only exception would be the character played by Philip Seymour Hoffman but it was the magic of Hoffman, he could take any character, even a small one like he played in this movie, and make him fascinating to behold (in fact, he was available only for 4 days and he had apparently the flu the whole time). Anyway, to conclude, even though I tend to think that this movie is slightly overrated, it is still pretty good though and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
