To be honest, I always had a hard time with John Hughes, but since this movie had a decent reputation, ย I thought I might as well check it out. Eventually, I have to admit that it was actually not bad at all. Sure, it never reached the level of 'The Breakfast Club' which would remain forever his only real masterpiece but it was still a decent a directing debut. Indeed, even though I tend to think that John Hugues gets too much credit for his depiction of teenagers in the 80โs, I have to admit that he did a fine job here and the whole thing worked really well as long as it remained realistic. At first, I had my doubts about Molly Ringwald as I thought she was actually too pretty for this part but she eventually won me over. The fact that she was really 16 years old around the time of filming was a great asset as well. Unfortunately, when they tried to be funny, half of the jokes were actually rather weak or even lame. For example, the wedding scene at the end was seriously pathetic. On the other hand, the small brother Mike Baker was quite hilarious. Anyway, to conclude, even if it wasnโt really flawless, I still think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.ย
