A good movie

I already saw this movie but, since it was a while back, I thought I might as well check it out again. Basically, when I started to discover Pedro Almodovar’s work, I kept hearing about this movie and I had some rather high expectations. To be honest, at the time, I thought it was eventually slightly underwhelming. Well, I was surprised by how little I remembered it so it was definitely worth rewatching it. Eventually, I really love the title and I think I enjoyed this movie now more after all these years but, to be honest, I was still not convinced though. Basically, Ricky and Marina were two pretty f*cked-up characters which made them more intriguing than your usual perfect leads. However, they were engaged in such a toxic relationship, it was very often rather cringe-inducing to behold. To be honest, you might wonder if such a movie could be made nowadays. Seriously, following the whole MeToo# movement, is it actually okay to make a movie about a woman who falls in love with the man who mishandled her? Indeed, the concept was that a woman got abducted, beat up, and, yet, still fell in love with the deranged guy who did all this to her. The fact that it was all handled as a very daft comedy didn’t make it easier to swallow for me, in the contrary. Eventually, it was another typical over-the-top comedy from the Spanish director filled up with his usual hysterical characters and it is really an acquired taste. Back then, it was already the 5th time that Antonio Banderas was working with Almodovar and it is apparently thanks to the international success of this movie that he managed to start afterwards a new career in the US. It would take them more than 20 years to finally work again together with ‘La piel que habito’. Anyway, to conclude, even though it didn’t really work for me, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Pedro Almodovar’s work.
