Review of Yoga Hosers

I really don't get the hate with Kevin Smith's new genre. I really liked Red State. While Tusk was quite strange I thought it was pretty entertaining as well. Besides I thought the gas station girls were amusing. Now they get their own story which seems like it will be fun. The trailer even looked pretty amusing. I'm also excited to see what he does with the next in his series Moose Jaws. Let's see if this is really worth it though.

So these movies are like a new sort of exploitation involving Canada. Of course their o's do have a slight oo to them, but they definitely push it pretty far. It's silly and probably can be a little offensive. I think it's all in good fun as Kevin Smith does seem to be pretty into Canada in general. I swear the way Canadians are I wouldn't be surprised if they all did yoga haha. Basically it's an extraordinary situation for basic teen girls. To be honest it's amusing and has some good moments, but it is probably one of the weakest Kevin Smith films I've seen. It wasn't very close to what I was hoping for or expecting. It wasn't all that bad though. I think maybe making it for teens hindered it quite a bit. I saw some things coming a mile away. The ending was amusing. The singing bits seemed a bit odd and misplaced here. I would have liked something more.

The acting is pretty good. The daughters of the famous Johnny Depp and Kevin Smith actually do hold their own as the leads. Sure their characters can be annoying at times, but I kind of liked them. I was rather annoyed though with Austin Butler and Johnny Depp's characters. They were just constantly annoying every single time I saw them. I didn't even like Guy Lapointe in Tusk so I knew I wouldn't care for him here. The bratzis were amusing, but I feel they weren't utilized enough. The main villain was kind of meh. I thought some of the small roles were pretty great like Ichabod, Yoga Bayer, Gordon Greenleaf (The way he dies was probably the only death worth noting as it was pretty crazy!). It was amusing how many of the family of the actors were in this too.

It was an amusing story. It felt like it was a Kevin Smith movie. It had enough of his typical cast to realize that. He manages to keep a good amount of raunchiness about it too. The trouble here though is that it's way too much of a teen movie. People don't like him doing horror/thriller type stories. My concern is him doing stuff like this. No it's not bad yet, but this is his worst movie to date in my opinion. Nothing was particularly wrong with the actors or characters except for Guy Lapointe and Hunter Calloway. I just wasn't feeling the whole thing. I'm still curious for Moose Jaws though. I sure hope it goes back to his style and not another aimed at teens. You can give this a shot if you are curious, but I would necessarily recommend it.
