Review of The Neon Demon

We were playing this at my theater. I remember going to clean multiple times near the end and it's definitely a weird ending when you have no idea what's going on. There is this annoying old man nobody likes who always comes to my theater. He said he watched this and tried watching the Shallows. He actually thought the PG-13 shark movie was worse than a movie about Cannibalistic Necrophilia loving super models. Nicolas Winding Refn is quite the intriguing director with such works as Bronson, Drive, and Only God Forgives. It's a love or hate sort of thing with him too. Personally I really enjoy what I've seen of his before. This is the only movie work by the other writers here. The opening credits take awhile to get to the story. The opening shot is interesting and creepy, but it's also beautiful in a way. That definitely wouldn't be something anyone would want to come home to. It's quite an interesting palate of colors that make this visually stunning. It takes the world of being a supermodel and escalates it's terrors. The characters were all interesting and unique. Specifically the four female leads were the best. Elle Fanning is such a gorgeous young lady and she is easily one of the best things about this film. Jena Malone was a very interesting character with multiple things that catch your attention. Bella Heathcote played the typical plastic loving model. Of course she is actually gorgeous. She plays unlikable very well considering she usually plays the nice girl. Abbey Lee was so unique looking. I really liked her look near the end. She is not as deep as the other girls, but it was interesting to see what they did with her. What a character Keanu Reeves plays. Keanu Reeves and Desmond Harrington were creepy, but they played their parts pretty well. Karl Glusman is such a bland actor. He has moments in his acting that are fine, but overall he is boring. I really would have loved more Christina Hendricks, but they really only gave her what is virtually a cameo. I love the symbolism here. This is one of those horror movies that feels more like a suspenseful drama until late into it's storytelling. There are a few hints of it throughout, but really nothing too major. It has a few moments that are pretty disturbing thematically and visually. It's a beautiful movie with great performances, but the overall storytelling can be a bit underwhelming at times. I found myself often bored with what was happening as the base story was fairly generic. There are some definite plot holes that could have been explored more. I feel like so much went unanswered or fixed. On an artistic point of view this is a wonderful piece of work. As for an actual movie I felt it lacked a lot. There are some really disturbing moments closer to the end. I wouldn't recommend them for the weak stomached. That being said I thought it was a decent watch. If you want to decipher the meaning of what goes on in this I would recommend it, but if you are looking for a simple watch this is not it.
