A good movie

This year, I saw ‘Belgica’ and since I thought it was pretty good, I was quite eager to see the other movies directed by Felix van Groeningen . First of all, those Belgian movies are usually with subtitles when they are broadcast on the Dutch channels but, since I saw it on a Belgian channel, there were no subtitles at all and I think I understood only 50% of the dialogue.  And, yet, even though I barely understood what the characters were saying, there was still something quite mesmerizing about this movie. Indeed, even though I have seen so far only 2 movies directed by van Groeningen, I think his strongest quality is that he always manages to provide some really 3 dimensional characters who always feel so genuine. Indeed, instead of the usual pretty faces that you get in your Hollywood productions, van Groeningen choses to give us some people who look normal and behave like some average human-being and I find this approach is so refreshing. Still, on top of the language issue, the plot was fairly random, especially from the point that one of the characters suddenly kill his dog. I also didn’t really like the fact that the most f*cked up character happened to be the only one with the kid. To conclude, even though it was maybe not a masterpiece, I thought it was a solid drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Felix van Groeningen’s work.
