Review of Monsterland

So I'm seeing mixed feelings about this one. That's understandable given that it's an anthology though. I figured I would give it a shot since I typically enjoy some of the stories and the variety. Most of the directors/writers here are first timers. Only a few have things I have heard of but haven't seen. Dick Grunert did a segment in Fun Size Horror: Volume 1 that was decent. John Skipp is the most well known here. He wrote Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Child and worked on a segment of Tales of Halloween. Anyways I hope this one shows which segments are which so it's easy to separate them. Let's see how Monsterland fares in the anthology world. Well it looks like I will have to wait until the end to find out who did which segment again.

"Monsterland Wraparound" Directed by Andrew Kasch and John Skipp

Well I can already tell this is going to be a goofy movie. That can go either way. I think this first thing is the wrap around segment. It looks like something pretty crazy has been going down here. The fact that he laughed so hard at the is kind of concerning. The fact that he was annoyed like that is common was pretty funny. He is about as turned off as I was about that last one. Now we come to the end of the wraparound as well. Oh that's actually a nice way to round it all up.
6.5/10

"Freshwater" (This is not the actual title and it doesn't look like it's credited to anyone. I can only assume maybe this was also by Andrew Kasch and John Skipp. Otherwise the credits don't seem to acknowledge this as a segment of it's own.)

Well that beginning was a welcome one haha. There is always a prankster smh. It might be a good idea to get out of the water right about now! Well that was a pretty quick one. A bit silly, but it was more or less fun.
6/10

"The Grey Matter" Directed by the McCoubrey Brothers and Written by Peter McCoubrey

Wait what the heck just happened? Okay that looks really painful and most likely not survivable. I'm curious as to what's going on. I think whatever it is has to be in his head. The characters are at least interesting. Well that was disturbing. It also kind of reminds me of Bad Milo and Alice in Wonderland. That red dress is on fire wow. Dude needs to learn to chill. Also that's an interesting predicament. I felt it ended at an odd point though.
6/10

"Curiosity Kills" Directed/Written by Sander Maran and Co-Written by Kaspar Ainelo and Jan Andresson

Yeah they are making those beans look quite gross. Okay I think I'm going to hate this one already. It's just awkward. I guess it's in a slight way amusing. I just don't really like this kind of style. Her slapping him was a bit dumb. That was kind of funny and messed up. Please let them get eaten haha. That's what I'm talking about. Well then that ending was something else.
2/10

"Hag" Written and Directed by Erik Gardner

Dude how are you not creeped out by that? Way to go and make something innocent and sweet come off as creepy. Okay I feel like that psychiatrist is actually the kid from Children of the Corn Isaac. He definitely is. Sure the atmosphere is fairly creepy, but I'm honestly really bored. I'm not sure why. Well that must have been pretty painful. A little fourth wall breaking there at the end. This segment was really boring. All it had going for it was two horror legends playing roles.
3/10

"Monster Man" Created by F. Sudol

They didn't notice that thing or were they "running"? This is amusing. Looks can be deceiving. Haha that was badass. That ending though!
6.5/10

"House Call" Directed by Graham Denman and Written by Dick Grunert

I love how it somewhat explains his character without words. That would be hard not to laugh at if I was in his position. Oh my gosh! That is just so cringe-worthy. That's insane! I loved that ending. That final shot was great! This is definitely a great segment!
9/10

"Happy Memories" Written and Directed by Jack Fields

Nooooo! I don't like this one. I hate ugly puppet looking things. I never eat Quizno's because of that weird puppet commercial they had once. So I'm already greatly turned off by this segment. Did someone slip something into my food I feel like I'm on LSD with this segment. Or that would be the only way I would enjoy this at least. I'm mortified and not in a fun way. Actually I'm pretty sure being on LSD would make it worse. Good lord this is hella stupid! I'm pretty sure I know why this segment happened. I just wish it didn't happen. It was not enjoyable whatsoever.

"Stay at Home Dad" Directed by John Skipp & Andrew Kasch and Written by Cody Goodfellow

Whoa I did not see that coming! It's very different but creative. I would be very cautious of such kind of experiments. Yeah those are definitely unnatural. Lol omg that is so awkward! Oh nooo! I was wondering when the actuall horror would come to play. That is pretty horrifying. Okay that ending was something else. It's a weird one for sure, but it was strangely enjoyable.
7.5/10

"Hellyfish" Directed by Patrick Longstreth and Robert McLean (Guess Written by as well)

We start off with a little reading for this one. That's a strange coupling of terrorists. The opening is a little cheesy. This one had some opening credits and they were pretty cool. Do people really even do that with jellyfish? That was amusing. Why are the hot ones always such brats? Why did he even try that in the first place? That game looks like fun. That kid has an interesting hair style. Haha on a public beach wow. Okay it's getting pretty fun and wicked. Now this short is what B movies should be all about. No I want more! Don't end it like that. This is my favorite segment of them all. It's cheesy, fun, and gory.
9.5/10

It was just okay. Then it spiraled downhill. Then near the end it got better. I would have to say I wish this was much shorter. A few of the segments were pretty good and I felt like those should have been put in a better anthology. The awful ones are pretty dreadful. I wouldn't torture anyone by suggesting it. If you do happen to check it out just watch House Call and the last two. Otherwise avoid this.
