Ever since I saw 'Little Odessa', I became a fan of James Gray so I was really eager to see his latest directing effort. Even though, after his impressive directing debut, he was hailed as the next best thing, he actually never really managed to fulfill those great expectations. I mean, it's not that his other movies were bad, in the contrary, but none of them turned out to be really amazing and this last one was a perfect example. Indeed, it was visually really neat and very well directed and the actors involved, especially Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix, all delivered some really strong performances. Basically, the problem I had is that even though the story was decent, it never managed to really grab me. As a result, even though the characters were fairly interesting, I never really cared about what they were going through. I mean, right from the start, they seem to all live a miserable life and that’s basically all what you will get afterwards, some even more misery. I mean, it's not that I find it depressive, in fact, I have seen much worse, it's just that it was so obvious and therefore not really interesting. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still believe it was a very well made drama with some very strong actors and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre
