An average movie

Since it is a rather obscure feature, I had no idea what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Nick Nolte, I thought I might as well check it out. On top of that, I had this movie on DVD for ages so it was really time to watch the damned thing. Well, it turned out to be a perfect example that, even if you have a great story, it doesn't mean necessarily that you will end up with a great movie. Indeed, I thought it was a fascinating tale (only partially based on real events which was already a slight disappointment) but, in my opinion, this material was just really poorly developed. Indeed, the first issue was the focus on the white characters. I mean, a British guy is the narrator and meet an American in the jungle who managed to become a king in Borneo. But what about the natives? Seriously, they barely talked during the whole thing and it was as if their thoughts and feelings didn't matter whatsoever even if, in fact, the whole thing was concerning their land. Even if you would put this old gimmick aside, the whole thing still didn't flow very well and when they started to fight against the Japanese, it became even more underwhelming. It's too bad because Nick Nolte was actually really good and there was really something interesting about his character. Still, all in all, it was pretty weak and I don't think it is really worth a look.
