An average movie

To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of musicals but since this one was a big success at the box-office, I was quite eager to check it out. Eventually, to really enjoy this, it all depends where you stand considering this kind of movies. Indeed, if you have a weak spot for the genre, there is a fair chance it will be a masterpiece for you but, if you are like me and don’t care much for it, it might at best be a decent watch but not much than that I’m afraid. I mean, I thought it was visually pretty impressive, especially the opening scene with this boat but, still, it was very long, perhaps too long, and surprisingly, the characters were in fact barely developed in spite of this long running time. It was probably due to the fact that they did 99% of the dialogues in songs, setting the focus on the emotions but not on the characters themselves. On top of that, except for Anne Hathaway (who really deserved her Academy Award) and Hugh Jackman, the rest of the cast didn’t really impress me. The best example was probably with Russell Crowe. I mean, he was really brave to get involved in a musical like this one, his voice was not bad and he was definitely able to sing in tone but I thought he was rather unable to show any kind of emotions and his performance felt rather flat. On the other hand, I must admit that I was really impressed by Hugh Jackman. Indeed, I was aware of the fact that he had a really solid musical career on the stage but the guy simply gave one of his best performances.  Indeed, even though he was constantly singing, the range of emotions he displayed was quite impressive. To conclude, even though it didn’t completely work for me, it was still not bad at all and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
