An average movie

To be honest, since this movie had a rather lame reputation, I wasn't expecting much from it but since it was Francis Ford Coppola's latest directing effort, I was still quite eager to check it out. Indeed, after a long break of 10 years, Coppola came back with these 3 rather obscure indie features. Right now, I still have to watch 'Youth Without Youth' but I was pleasantly surprised by 'Tetro', however, this last directing effot was a major step down, I'm afraid. Basically, even though there were a few nice ideas here and there (I especially enjoyed the photography during the night scenes but even this became rather redundant very quickly) but most of it was rather garbage. I mean, Coppola apparently tried to make some kind of minimalist experimental horror feature and he threw basically everything he could find in the mix : a second rate horror writer, a spooky town and a haunted hotel, some gothic kids, a sherif/writer/psychopath, some mass killing, Edgar Allen Poe sometimes popping up at random and even the death of a child during a boat accident which was somewhat rather reminiscent of the death of his own son Gian-Carlo Coppola. Well, half of this was just not interesting or entertaining and, with a running time of barely 80 mins, none of them of those elements was propely developed. To conclude, I'm afraid it is probably the weakest movie directed by Coppola so far and I don't think it is really worth a look.
