Into the Wild

What a huge tool. That's what kept going through my head as I watched this movie, especially when the movie is done. You know from the beginning of the movie the eventual outcome for the main character, who goes by the stupid name of "Alexander Supertramp", because the sister's voice-over is in the past tense. The only thing I wanted to know was how it happened, and when I saw that, I thought even less of the guy. Are we supposed to have sympathy for this man? I don't understand why this movie had to be made in the first place, nor do I understand why it is so popular, or was when it first came out anyway.
