An average movie

Once again, it was a really obscure flick (not even 10 listal members have watched the damned thing so far) so I had really had no idea what to expect from it but since I have a weak spot for Anthony Hopkins, I thought I might as well give it a try. In fact, it was already the 2nd adaptation of this story that I saw, the first one being 'Vanya on 42nd Street', the last movie directed by Louis Malle but, to be honest, if they didn't say in the beginning credits that it was from the famous play written by Chekhov, I'm not sure ย I would have noticed that it was actually the same story. Indeed, I might sound stupid but I think it is one of the most confusing stories I have seen (I'm actually surprised that I did give 'Vanya on 42nd Street' a positive rating) and, on top of that, Hopkins moved the setting to North Wales at the beginning of the 20th century and changed all the names. Stil, after 10 minutes, I was able to figure out who was who but I just couldn't see what it was actually all about and what they actually wanted to achieve here. At least, the actors were pretty solid and, with such fine dialogues, I'm not surprised that Anthony Hopkins wanted to bring it to the screen. To conclude, even though I didn't really connect with the damned thing, I still think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.ย
