An average movie

After watching so many movies adapted from some popular Young Adult novel, I had some rather low expectations concerning this one but my step-son was quite eager to watch it. Eventually,  even though I didn’t care for most of it, it was actually slightly better than the most of the other movies in this genre. Indeed, even though I'm getting really tired of those stories trying to mash up some fantasy world into something contemporary, I have to admit that this universe actually had some potential. On top of that, Lily Collins and  Jamie Campbell Bower were quite charismatic and they had some really good chemistry together. Unfortunately,  that’s pretty much all that this movie had to offer, I'm afraid. Indeed,  even though the whole thing clearly begged to be darker and edgy,  unfortunately,  it never went beyond the gothic outfits and what remained was something terribly safe and generic. Eventually,  it was yet another flop at the box-office so the planned sequels were cancelled and, apparently,  they might be rebooting the whole thing as a TV show. Anyway,  to conclude, even though it was certainly nothing remotely impressive, I think it was watchable and I guess it might be worth a look, at least, if you really like the genre.
