An average movie

To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since there was a pretty good cast involved,  I thought I might as well give it a try. Well, even though it was a decent watch, I'm not sure I really cared about the characters or what they were going through. Basically, it takes place in the late 30's in London and, instead of a plot, you get a succession of supposedly funny scenes,  usually taking place during some rather decadent party, involving all kinds of colorful people. Eventually,  I thought that, even though some of these characters were sometimes funny, they were also all rather vapid. I mean, apparently,  none of them seem to have a day job and all they do is either partying,  preparing for the next party or recovering from the last one. There was also some rather boring and predictable sub-plot involving some bet and they kept bringing it back as some kind of running joke but it was rather tedious, I'm afraid. Fortunately,  Stephen Fry, in his only directing effort, was the perfect choice for this material and he managed to give a good feeling of this time and place and there was indeed a really solid supporting cast. To conclude, even though I didn't care much for the damned thing, I still think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
