I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I was quite eager to check it out again. First of all, I have to admit it, I had actually never heard of Lenny Bruce before watching this flick and the main reason I actually wanted to watch the damned thing in the first place was because I always had a weak spot for Dustin Hoffman. Indeed, back in those days, Hoffman was at the top of his game and, here, he was once again pretty impressive. Concerning Lenny Bruce, I have never been really interested by stand-up comedians in general but this guy was really fascinating and to imagine that he was providing such raunchy material in his routine more than 50 years ago was rather impressive. However, it was still a rather straightforward biopic though. Furthermore, in my opinion, the mockumentary approach didn't really provide any added value to the material at all but, fortunately, the story and the characters involved were entertaining and interesting enough. It was also a very nice touch to shot the whole thing in black and white which enhanced the dark sense of humor provided by Bruce. Anyway, to conclude, I really liked this flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in this subject.ย
