A good movie

Basically,  there were two main reasons why I wanted to watch this movie.  First of all, I always had a weak spot for Denzel Washington and it was really neat to see him when he was much younger before he reached fame. The second reason was that, even though it had some rather weak ratings,  Roger Ebert really loved it and even thought it was one of the best movies released in 1989, no less than that. Eventually, I thought that there was a lot of things to enjoy here. I mean,  right from the start,  you get to see Michael Rose and Rita Marley performing a really nice tune on stage so I was already sold within a few minutes. To be honest,  I can’t say I was really blown away like good old Roger but I have to admit that it  was still a decent film noir greatly combined with a mesmerizing Jamaican setting. Indeed, even though you get to see the usual stereotypes of the genre, since it was taking place in such an exotic background with the locals with their own habits,  their own way of behaving and communicating with each other, it became a really intriguing and effective mix. To conclude, even though it seems to be rather forgotten nowadays,  it is actually pretty good and it is definitely worth a look.
