**Synopsis and review by Claude.ai**

**Opportunity Knocks** (1990) is a lighthearted comedy caper starring Saturday Night Live legend Dana Carvey in his first leading movie role, released at the height of his fame as the Church Lady and his famous impressions. Marking the feature film directorial debut of Donald Petrie, who would go on to direct Mystic Pizza follow-ups like Grumpy Old Men and Miss Congeniality, the film follows Eddie Farrell, a fast-talking small-time Chicago con artist who runs scams with his loyal partner Lou. When one of their schemes goes wrong and angers a dangerous local mobster, Eddie needs a place to hide and stumbles into the perfect opportunity: a luxurious suburban house left empty by its vacationing owner. Assuming a new identity as a friend of the family, Eddie charms his way into the lives of the wealthy Malkin household, landing a high-powered corporate job with the hard-nosed patriarch and falling for his smart, beautiful daughter. As his lies pile up and his con begins to feel like a real life he actually wants, Eddie must decide whether to pull off the ultimate score or come clean, in a feel-good mix of mistaken identity farce, romantic comedy, and heartfelt redemption story.

Carvey showcases his gift for voices, impressions, and physical comedy in the role of Eddie, backed by a strong supporting cast that includes Robert Loggia as the gruff but likable businessman Milt Malkin, Julia Campbell as his daughter Annie, Todd Graff as Eddie's scheming sidekick Lou, James Tolkan as the menacing gangster Sal Nicoletti, and Milo O'Shea and Doris Belack in memorable family roles. Produced by Mark R. Gordon and Christopher Meledandri for Imagine Entertainment and released by Universal Pictures, the film was written by Mitchel Katlin and Nat Bernstein and features a bright, bouncy score by Miles Goodman. Though it received mixed reviews on release, Opportunity Knocks has become a warmly remembered slice of early 1990s comedy nostalgia, a charming showcase for Dana Carvey's comic talents, and a fun watch for fans of con artist movies, SNL alumni films, and classic feel-good comedies from the era.
