The Fairfield Halls in Croydon was bursting at the seams when Judie Tzuke took to the stage during her 1985 Cat Is Out tour. Filmed as part of the ‘Live From London’ series, the hugely talented singer/songwriter performed all of her classic tracks in her 90 minute show, including How Sweet It Is, I'll Be The One and the UK Chart hit Stay With Me Till Dawn.
Born to Polish immigrant parents in 1956, Judie Tzuke's childhood stood her in good stead for a career in showbiz, as both her mother and father had connections with music management and the entertainment industry. Schooled in music and visual arts, she began to perform in local folk clubs at 15 years old but it wasn't until she teamed up with Mike Paxman in 1975 that her fledging career began to take flight. A brief but important period as the duo Tzuke & Paxo and the release of the single "These Are The Laws", brought Tzuke to the attention of Rocket Records and she signed a solo contract in 1977.
Her first single "For You" in 1978 had limited success but the following year's "Stay With Me Till Dawn" co-written by Tzuke and Paxman, was a Top 20 hit in the UK and reached number 1 in Australia.
Its popularity ensured her debut album Welcome To The Cruise reached the Top 20, and it was swiftly followed into the chats by her 1980's release Sportscar. Whilst the album entered the Top 10 in the UK, it failed to delivery any hit singles.
Following a tour as Elton John's support act in North America, Tzuke released her third album, I Am The Phoenix in 1981, and despite another Top 20 chart position, it was to prove her last venture with Rocket Records. Shoot The Moon in 1982 was Tzuke's first outing with her new label Chrysalis Records and once again the album went Top 20, but once again it failed to deliver any hit singles.
Much to her frustration, Tzuke seemed incapable of cracking the all important America market, despite her fan base and popularity continuing to thrive in the UK and Europe with sell-out tours and festival appearances. All through the late 80s and 90s, Tzuke continued to release albums and tour, and even started her own record label. Still working hard today, Tzuke now also provides material for other artists as a successful writer.
