We were greatly saddened today to hear that legendary comedy producer John Howard Davies had sadly lost his battle with cancer and passed away on Monday of this week.
John, known throughout the industry as JHD, was the producer of many of the BBC's greatest comedy successes.
His work includes; Monty Python's Flying Circus, Fawlty Towers, Steptoe And Son, The Goodies and Mr Bean.
As well as producing, Davies also co-directed the first four episodes of the Monty Python TV show as well as the first series of Fawlty Towers, including the classic episode The Germans. In fact it was John who suggested Prunella Scales for the part of Sybil Fawlty, Basil's domineering wife in Fawlty Towers, who was a major part of the show's success.
John had started out in life as a child actor, starring as Oliver Twist in David Lean's celebrated 1948 adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel.
He'll be sadly missed.
