Journalist Noor Tagouri fully immersed herself in the underground world of the U.S. sex trade—and she took away valuable lessons about resilience and self-care.

Journalist Noor Tagouri says there’s a lot to learn about the U.S. sex trade.
“When I first heard about it I was very naïve and I thought, oh, that must be something that happens abroad. I need to go overseas and I need to do something about it,” she explained. “And then I realized that this was something that was happening literally in my own backyard.”
Tagouri’s documentary “Sold in America” goes inside sex trafficking, sex work, discrimination, and drug addiction.
“I didn’t want to sensationalize what they were doing or glamorize, or make it about sex because the reality is the sex trade isn’t always about. And that’s what I wanted to get at,” she stated. “And I wanted to make sure that came from a place of empathy and compassion with every single individual because they did not owe us the stories that shared with us. And yet they still did.”
Tagouri says immersing herself in the story, and dealing with everything else in her life, affected her mental health and taught her the value of self-care. She also partnered with her husband’s clothing company Lisn Up to create a line where 50% of proceeds go to youth homelessness.
