Translating the sub song "How Sorrowful is Love" (情愛幾多哀) from the Demi Gods and Semi Devils II 1982 (天龍八部之虛竹傳奇) into English.

Original Cantonese Song by Michael Kwan (關正傑).

The 1982 series was made by TVB based on the Demi Gods and Semi Devils (天龍八部) wuxia novel by Jin Yong (金庸), who is also referred to as Louis Cha in English.

Although stories by Jin Yong have been adapted in TV series numerous times. The 1982 adaptation by TVB was the first time ever that Demi Gods and Semi Devils was adapted into a TV series. So there was a lot of pressure on the cast and crew and they delivered a stunning and memorable effort. The sound track was fantastic and set the benchmark for the 1980's Jin Yong adaptations. The TV series was split into two parts, consisting of 30 episodes and 20 episodes respectively.

It was an all star cast led by Bryan Leung (梁家仁) as the tragic hero Qiao Feng (喬峰)/Xiao Feng (蕭峰), a young Kent Tong (湯鎮業) as the straight froward Prince Duan Yu (段譽), Felix Wong (黃日華) (who appeared from Part II) as the naive Shaolin monk Xuzhu (虛竹), Shek Sau (石修) as the plotting Murong Fu (慕容復), Patrick Tse (謝賢) as the playboy Prince Duan Zhengchun (段正淳), Idy Chan (陳玉蓮) as Wang Yuyan (王語嫣), Cecilia Wong (黃杏秀) played two different characters in this series in Azhu (阿朱) and Zhong Ling (鍾靈), Sharon Yeung (楊盼盼) as Mu Wanqing (木婉清), and finally Katie Chan (陳復生) as Azi (阿紫). The cast is bigger than that but those are the actors and actresses that I will focus on. Despite all the beautiful female leads in the series, I must admit that I developed a childhood crush for Cecilia Wong after watching the show. She put so much energy into the role of both Azhu and Zhong Ling. I thought she was very cute. Initially, I thought Kent Tong came across as pretty boring in his role as Duan Yu but after watching the 1997 remake and the more recent mainland Chinese production, I come to understand that the character of Duan Yu is pretty straight forward. Finally it seems that Idy Chan started the trend of so many actresses who played the role of Wang Yuyan also being cast as Xiaolongnü (小龍女) in the Return of the Condor Heroes. Overall I enjoyed this series as a kid. However, I enjoyed Part II of the series less because by then Azhu had died and also the fact they really started to deviate from the novel in the back end of the story. So for me tat made it less enjoyable.

The song took me a couple of days to translate. I'm probably not 100% happy with it but it'll do for now. I cut this clip together focused on Kent Tong's and Idy Chan's characters. Because Duan Yu's pursuit of Wang Yuyan in the story is pretty much the essence of the song. Also one of the rare moments in story telling when a "good guy" wins out on romance through persistence. So enjoy...

I am willing to take requests to translate other TVB or wuxia songs in the comments section.
