Out of former President Trump's five children, 14-year-old Barron Trump is the only one who could be said to have "grown up" while the 45th president served in the White House. And he grew up quite literally, too, since he was tall enough to hit close to the height of his mother's shoulder in 2017 and then was towering over her, as well and his dad, just two years later. But while he may look older than he is, he's still very much under his parents' care and their decisions will likely dictate much of what he experiences now that the Trump family has officially vacated the White House.
While the Obamas chose to stay in the D.C. area for daughter Sasha's schooling after leaving office, the Trumps are not following suit. Barron had previously attended a high school in Potomac, Maryland — about 20 miles away from the White House — but after People reported that the Trumps were renovating their Mar-A-Lago quarters in December of 2020, Forbes also spotted moving trucks outside of Trump's Florida resort in mid-January 2021.
Barron probably won't need too much time to adjust from Washington D.C. winters to sunshine and beach weather, but there's one particular item from his time in the White House that he will take with him to the Sunshine State. Melania and the former president are entitled to Secret Service protection for the rest of their lives. But a mandate from Obama's term only requires Secret Service protection for children of former presidents up to the age of 16, according to CBS News. That means Barron gets at least one more year of official security protection, as he transitions into civilian life.
But as he says goodbye to his former high school, People reported in December 2020 that Melania was sussing out Florida-based schools for her son. Just days later, Page Six posed that her school of choice might be the over $36,000-a-year Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale. If Barron ultimately enrolls at the exclusive school, he'll be 40 minutes away from his parents in Mar-A-Lago. There, he'd be able to take advantage of tennis courts and an Olympic-sized pool. And, according to the school, class size is limited to just 20 students — all of which provides families with only the best at Pine Crest.
After school, Barron would also have roughly 50 different clubs to choose from, where he could fill his free time along with the other children of South Florida's elite if he didn't want to head directly back to his house. And once he graduates, he would join the ranks of other famous Pine Crest alum, including pop star Ariana Grande, actor Kelsey Grammer, and former Real Housewives of New York star, Bethenny Frankel.
We can also get a hint about what it's like to leave the White House from other former first kids. In the past, incoming and outgoing First Kids have even toured the home together, as they made the transition. Jenna Bush Hager reflected in 2020 on Instagram about how much fun she had showing the Obama sisters around in 2008 — pointing out all the best hiding spots. And Chelsea Clinton, who lived there from '93 to 2001, famously used her experience to inspire her graduate studies. According to US Magazine, once her dad was free to travel as a private citizen, Clinton enrolled in graduate school at the University of Oxford, where she obtained a master's degree in international relations.
Malia Obama chose to take a gap year before college and held off on enrolling until her dad was no longer the sitting president — so, for her, leaving the White House meant added freedom and less media during her college years. And, like her sister, Sasha's jump from Pennsylvania Avenue involved a move and also a change of culture. According to E!, mom Michelle revealed that the sisters still had security, even if it looked a little different, and still had to be aware of public scrutiny.
Barron Trump will likely face many of the same challenges as the first children before him — but, no matter what, he has his family to support him all along the way.
