Separated by 9,000 kilometres, the people of Japan and Turkey have fostered deep ties of friendship. In a time when people all over the world are growing steadily more suspicious of other nations over politics, economics and religion, 125 YEARS MEMORY is an epic of hope demonstrating how fellow-feeling between one person and another can bring about a miracle.
Two historical incidents that deepened the friendship between Japan and Turkey are connected in this story of friendship and compassion: The sinking of the Ertuğrul frigate off the Japanese coast in 1890, and the evacuation of Japanese nationals from Iran in 1985.
The theme song «Ertuğrul Türküsü» («Ertuğrul Ballad»), performed by Turkish folk singer Kubat, pays homage to the Ertuğrul frigate, which has become a symbol of Japanese-Turkish friendship.
Virtuous director Mitsutoshi Tanaka's call for world peace received the Japan Academy Film Prize in ten categories, including Best Sound Recording, Best Art Direction, Excellent Film, Excellent Director and Excellent Music.
