This is an original movie trailer for METELLO, an Italian period drama, starring Massimo Ranieri, Ottavia Piccolo, Tina Aumont and Lucia Bosรฉ. Based on a novel by Vasco Pratolini, the film tells the story of a young, working-class man in Florence, at the turn of the 20th century, and his attempt to escape the poverty and oppression that had killed his parents.
A long-planned project of director Mauro Bolognini, METELLO was originally set to star actor Albert Finney, but the director eventually decided on casting pop star-turned-actor Ranieri in the title role. Playing his long-suffering wife was young Piccolo, a near unknown who went on to win the Best Actress award at that year's Cannes Film Festival.
The 1970 production is probably most notable for the meticulous detail of its visual design. The atmospheric cinematography is by Bolognini's frequent collaborator Ennio Guariani, while period settings and costumes were supervised by designer Piero Tosi. The evocative musical score was composed by Ennio Morricone.
