(30 Oct 1995) STORY
Shannen Doherty in "Mallrats"
Subject: New Film Release
Location: New York
Date: recent
Duration: 3:22

Hollywood badgirl returns in 'Clerks'follow-up. It's the film which marks the big budget breakthrough for acclaimed independent director Kevin Smith. It's also the film which Hollywood bad girl Shannen Doherty is hoping will throw her back in the limelight and provide some much needed critical as well as commercial success. "Mallrats" is writer/director Kevin Smith's follow-up to his critically acclaimed feature film debut "Clerks" - as well as the second installment of what Smith calls his New Jersey trilogy. In "Clerks", the 24-year-old New Jersey filmmaker chronicled the day-in-the-life of two convenience store clerks. Now the director turns his attention to the denizens of another famous - some might say infamous - American retailing venue - the neighbourhood mall.
"A comedy of remarriage in which no one's been wed" is how Smith describes the film. "The 'Mallrats' story is basically the adventure of these two guys who lose their girlfriends and then spend the entire movie trying to get them back". TS (Jeremy London) and Brodie (Jason Lee) are the two heart sick compatriots wandering disconsolately around the mall. The mysterious and soundless sage Silent Bob (a reprisal of his "Clerks" role for director Kevin Smith) is struck by the predicament of the two youths and advises them on the most suitable course of action to reclaim their lost loves. Like 'Clerks" which was praised for its edgy humour and unfettered
realism, 'Mallrats' aims to push the boundaries of so called teenage comedy. "We decided we wanted to do an all-out comedy that really pushes the limits" says Smith. Mallrats may have more physical comedy than "Clerks" - but like Clerks, the film has a tight script with sharp dialogue loaded with wry comment on 90's teen culture.
But like any film - the script is only as good as the actors make it. Smith cast the two male leads for their instant
onscreen chemistry - with Jeremy as the perfect straight man and Jason with the comic timing. "Casting Brodie's girlfriend Rene was crucial because she has to be a feminine version of him" says Smith. "Shannen Doherty is great because she speaks naturally with this rapid fire kind of delivery. Shannen is definitely not a one note character, and Shannen really delivers". For Doherty, who catapulted herself into the limelight on the back of the American TV series Beverly Hills 90210, the role of Rene was one she was eager to sink her teeth into . "When I read the script, I just adored it because it's really an actor's piece" she says. For Doherty, the film could make or break her. If its the latter, she could be in for a short spell in the malls once again - this time on her days off.
