Tibet and the benefits of tourism

Despite of tourism boom, the crowds of tourists are posing a threat to Tibetan treasures. The well-known Potala Palace, the world’s highest palace, has stood proudly atop Red Hill, overlooking Tibet’s regional capital of Lhasa for 1,300 years. Added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1994, the palace is an architectural wonder, even by modern standards, receiving 830,000 visitors last year. However, the influx of tourists has put wall paintings, Buddha statues, frescos, and scriptures at risk.
