The famous quote by Lord Acton "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely," continues "good men are almost always bad men." It is the human condition. No one shows the contradiction of humanity greater than Pope Innocent III.

This is part one of two that takes a biographical look at the man and the office in the context of the run up to the Fourth Crusade. His relationship to Frederick II will take place in a subsequent part.

Christopher Tyerman’s book “God’s War” is a modern authority on the Holy Land Crusades. The biggest reasons for Innocent’s violence became the forced compliance of “bowing to the wafer” of transubstantiation during and after his papacy. While some of these events may have had their inception during his rule, his two immediate successors really relied on them. Much really hinges on whether he was a well intentioned but bumbling fool whose actions seemed to always lead to large-scale violence, or whether perhaps he was authoritarian and unmerciful. His character is fleshed out in other chapters. NG
