Synopsis / Plot
Grease, the movie version of the popular musical, is an idyllic portrayal of high school infatuation and 50's cool. Danny (John Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) share a summer romance, thinking it will end with the beginning of school. But Sandy is transferred to Rydell High School, where Danny is leader of the leather-jacketed T-Birds. His "too-cool" stature is in jeopardy when he discovers Sandy is a cheerleader, and attempts to avoid showing his real feelings. Both decide to make the other jealous, and with the help of the "Pink Ladies", headed by wise-cracking Rizzo (Stockard Channing), Sandy eventually succeeds in winning Danny back. The 50's high school experience is relived through fast cars--the T-Birds challenge the Scorpions at Thunder Road; a dance contest--National Bandstand emcee Vince Fontaine (Edd Byrnes) brings a national competition to Rydell High; slumber parties--Sandy is insulted by Rizzo for being a "good girl"; and drive-in movies--Danny takes advantage of Sandy, and their problems begin again. Danny's harrowing race at Thunder Road makes the two more devoted than ever, and on the last day of school, Danny proudly wears his hard-earned letterman's sweater while Sandy sports a new look also--a motorcycle jacket.
