This was perhaps one of the most common import games in the U.S. that I can remember from back in the day. Around the mid-to-late 90s when Dragon Ball still wasn't where it is today in the states, this game, Ultimate Battle 22 and Final Bout could be found in many major video game outlets that even remotely dabbled in games from overseas. Beware the next two portions as I go on a tirade and tell you a tale.
I can still remember back when I lived in New York... me, my brother, and my best friend would ride what was known as the "Dollar Van" straight to Jamaica Avenue and we'd go into the underground coliseum shopping outlet to see all the strange items gathered from all over the world, both legitimate and bootlegged.
I can vaguely remember little outlets that sold brand-new import Dreamcast games and lots of Dragon Ball games and one place inside of a shoe store I believe called "Don't Panic" that sold Super Famicom and Mega Drive games, but this one game caught my friend's eye. He bought it and would often tell me about the game. However, he eventually got rid of his Playstation and gave his mementos to me that I still have to this day. He gave me Tales of Destiny, Evil Zone, Mega Man Legends, Pocket Fighter, DBZ Ultimate Battle 22 and this game. I decided to pop it in today for a little nostalgia.
This game, even to this day, has one of the most intriguing fighting engines of all DBZ games and captures the essence of DBZ's fighting well, though I'm not going to sit here and say it's all that and a bag of chips. I will say that this game could easily be replicated and improved with today's technology if developers weren't so lazy... like it could be like Tenkaichi, but with 3-on-3 fights and the same interesting seesaw gameplay and perhaps a more eloborate and deeper fighting system (have specials besides finishers and such). While this game is fun to an extent, saying it's ugly and repetitive is an understatement.
Even given when this game was made, the visuals are kinda horrible (yes, even back in 1996), the opening movie is amongst some of the grainiest movies on the Playstation, and even the anime slideshows within the game are terrible. Graphically, it looks even less polished than Ultimate Battle 22, and most can agree that game was average at best. If graphics was the only issue, then this game would be okay, but punching, kicking, and tiny "pew-pew-pew" bullets until someone wins and performs an only decent looking special attack is kinda lame, only to do it all over again.
Again, remake this one I say, but as-is, this game doesn't stand the test of time in my book. This game was also supposedly released in European territories for the Sega Saturn and is marginally better from my understanding. Meh.
