Pakeezah (1972)

The film starts off with Nargis, a tawaif or courtesan, who elopes with her lover Shahabuddin. But after her encounter with her lover's father and spurned by him due to her social status, she runs away and lives out the rest of her life in a graveyard where she gives birth to a daughter named Sahib Jaan.
Later on Nargis's sister, Nawab Jaan, learns of Nargis's whereabout but by the time that she arrives at the graveyard Nargis is dead from childbirth, leaving behind her baby daughter. Nawab Jaan then takes in the child as her own. Shahabuddin learns of the existence of his daughter 16 years later due to a letter that was written by Nargis but never sent. Shahabuddin then goes to retrieve his daughter but by the time he arrives, Nawab Jaan has already left the city with Sahib Jaan due to anger and still blaming Shahabuddin as the cause of her sister's death.
Along the way Sahib Jaan falls in love with the forest ranger Salim Ahmed Khan but due to the shame of her social status as a tawaif, she feels as if she doesn't deserve to be by his side.
