Christmas Island is the tip of an extinct volcano and emerges from the edge of the Java trench some three thousand metres deep. A narrow fringing reef surrounds the island, beyond that the water plunges to un-imaginable depths.
This pristine reef is fed from above by abundant sunshine and from below with rich nutrients from the deep water upwellings, and is home to millions of colourful reef dwelling fish. In the deeper water, large pelagics including sharks, manta rays, dolphins, turtles and whale sharks can be found very close to shore.
It's a very special marine environment and a magnet for divers and snorkelers alike; and there are also coastal caves to be explored.
