Antoni GAUDì - (1882 - ....) - La SAGRADA Familia (Barcelona - Spain)
La Sagrada Família, the full name in Catalan "Expiatorio Temple de la Sagrada Familia" (Expiatory Temple of the Holy Family) [ www.sagradafamilia.cat/] in Barcelona [41°24'11.29"N- 2°10'25.85"E], Catalonia (Spain) is a great Roman Catholic basilica (minor), still under construction, considered the masterpiece of architect Antoni Placid Guillem Gaudí i Cornet (Reus, June 25, 1852 - Barcelona, June 10, 1926), the greatest exponent of Catalan Modernism. The vastness of the scale of the project and his distinctive style has made it one of the main symbols of the city and one of the obligatory mass tourism. The project is based on the reconstructed versions of the projects and on the lost models (a fire in 1936, hanged during the Spanish Civil War by the Republicans to the atelier of Gaudí, destroyed a lot of design drawings of the famous architect), on the study of the portion of the building made personally from Gaudí and on a modern adaptations. Each part of the project is full of allegories and mystics Christian symbolism, because Gaudí conceived the church to be the "last great Sanctuary of Christianity" .The most striking aspects is its slender spire. It has already been carried out in total 8, but the spire of the basilica will be 18, representing in ascending order the 12 apostles, the 4 evangelists, the Virgin and the highest of all, Jesus. The spiers of the evangelists will be surmounted by sculptures of their traditional symbols an angel, a bull, an eagle and a lion. The spire of the Madonna will be topped by the Star of the Morning while the central one of Christ, which will be built on the base of the dome above the nave, will have a height of 170 meters and will be surmounted by a huge cross. The total height of the spiers, however, be less than one meter of that of the Montjuïc, because Gaudí believed that his work should not exceed that of God. The eight already produced lower spiers are topped with clusters of grapes, representing the spiritual fruit. The church will have three big sides, two of which have already been completed. The facade of the Nativity, which has a Gothic appearance, was built with the sculptures provided by Gaudí and built by J. Busquets. The facade of the Passion, which affects in particular for his thin characters, gaunt, tormented by the ominous forms, controversial work by the contemporary sculptor Josep Subirachs, this facade is very attractive also for the presence of numbers that added up to lines, columns, and diagonal always result in "33", the years of Christ. On the last front of Gloria, not yet realized. The themes of all the decoration include words of the liturgy. The towers are decorated with words such as "Hosanna, " "Excelsis", and "Sanctus"and the great door of the Passion façade reproduce words from the Bible in several languages, including Catalan, it is expected that the facade is decorated with words of Glory taken from the Apostles' Creed. On 7 November 2010, with a Missa Solemnis headed by Pope Benedict XVI, was consecrated the nave characterized by enormous columns that resemble trees branched and a ceiling that seems composed of giant sunflowers, and the crossing, including the choir and the rose window will give you light. With the completion of these parts, the project takes next step for the construction of the central dome which is built on the great central spire of Christ.
