NOTE This video is dedicated to tikizzia1981 as a token of my appreciation for opening my eyes to the importance of
Violeta Parra.
Violeta del Carmen Parra Sandoval (1917-1967) was a Chilean folklorist, musician, composer, singer, sculptress, tapestry-maker, painter, poet and political activist. These are only a few of the words which come to mind to describe this remarkable woman.
From her repertoire of compositions, I chose "La Jardinera" as sung by her daughter Isabel Parra who is a musical success of her own.
Included in this video is a jazz adaptation of the song by Violeta's grandson Angel Parra. Accompanying his interprative performance are examples of Violeta's visual art especially the wall-sized tapestries.
Both interpretations provide a magnificent homage to Violeta Parra, mother and grandmother.
Though Violeta's life ended on a tragic note, her music and artistry made her an icon and a legend in Chile as well as in other parts of the world.
The lyrics are translated into English.
